I would not have believed it if I didn’t see it myself.
The Amsterdam Public Library’s new Central Library is opening in July, and it’s all about the future.
We live in a many faceted society; our politics, economics, social and cultural affairs all contributing to its diversity. The library plays an important role as centre for information, culture, communication and education. In the 21st century information is synonymous with power. You will notice that if you lack it, -because it’s the well informed who have all the advantages and wield the power. The library can provide you with both the source and the access. (link)
That’s not what’s so shocking. APL is also rolling out uniforms for librarians. The Library has posted a brief fashion show on YouTube.
If we were to have the same thing here, there would have to be some modifications.
- Different uniforms would be needed to distinguish the professional librarian from the paraprofessional library assistant or clerk.
- Stripes on the sleeves would be required to determine seniority and/or tenure. For those in leadership positions, fancy epaulets would be acceptable.
- Medals and bars would be worn on the chest to recognize singular achievements.

Those are the best looking uniforms I have ever seen. I don’t think I’d mind having a uniform if I could wear those!
